SUMMARY:Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month\, two minutes silence is observed across the country to mark the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front during the First World War after over four years of brutal warfare. \nThe moment in 1918 when the hostilities ceased was originally named Armistice Day\, becoming a time when allied nations honoured the brave sacrifices made by all who fought and lost their lives during the First World War. At the end of the Second World War\, the Australian and British governments renamed November 11 Remembrance Day to mark and remember all who have fallen in times of war. \nJoin us this Remembrance Day as we pay our respects in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. \nWREATH REGISTRATION \nIf you wish to place a wreath during the service please register by Wednesday 6 November on 4051 5254 or admin@crslsb.org.au

SUMMARY:Vietnam Veterans Day - Postponed
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 55th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. The battle saw the action of 108 ANZACS against a Viet Cong (North Vietnamese) force estimated between 1\,500 and 2\,500. The Battle was one of the heaviest conflicts of the Vietnam War as well as one of few battles\, in the history books\, to be won against such odds. \nWhether or not you support the wars\, any wars\, it is undeniable that we owe these service men and women\, of all conflicts\, a debt of gratitude. The commemorative service is a time for reflection and appreciation of the sacrifices made. \nThe official address will be given by President of the National Servicemen’s Association\, Patrick Galwey. \nAbout National Service Men:\nWith the outbreak of Confrontation with Indonesia between 1962 and 1966 and the Vietnam War\, recruiting again was insufficient and the Government introduced the National Service Act 1964. Men aged 20 were selected by a birthday ballot for the Army. Between 30 June 1965 and 7 December 1972\, a total of 63\,735 were called up for two years fulltime service integrated into regular Army units. From 1965 to 1972\, over 15\,300 national servicemen served in the Vietnam War\, with 200 killed and 1\,279 wounded. Despite the compulsion\, National Servicemen did their training\, active and reserve duties well and honourably and most regarded it as a rewarding part of their lives. \nWHEN: 5:00pm on Wednesday\, 18 August 2021\nWHERE: Cairns Cenotaph\, Esplanade\, Cairns \nWREATH-LAYING: Members of the public who wish to lay a wreath are required to register with the Cairns Sub Branch by close of business Monday 16 August. Any members who are not registered and wish to lay a wreath will have the opportunity to do so at the conclusion of the service. \nMembers of the public who are laying a wreath are to supply their own and it is their responsibility to carry it with them. There are no facilities or arrangements for storage or transport of personal wreaths at the service \nDETAILS: \n\nThe service will be conducted outdoors with seating and temporary shelter provided.\nAttendees should ensure they appropriately equipped with hats\, water bottles and sunscreen.\nLimited medical support is provided at the commemoration. Attendees that have medical conditions should come prepared.\nSeating at the commemorative service is not allocated or reserved and is available on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:VIETNAM VETERANS' DAY
DESCRIPTION:Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War began in 1962 with the arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam. Almost 60\,000 Australians\, including Army\, Navy and Air Force personnel\, served in Vietnam; 521 died as a result of the war and over 3\,000 were wounded. \nThis year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Binh Ba. On the morning of 6 June 1969\, an Australian tank and armored recovery vehicle were approaching Binh Ba\, less than 10km from the Australian Task Force Base at Nui Dat\, when the tank was struck by a rocket propelled grande. This provocative shot heralded a battle that raged for two days\, left much of Binh Ba in ruins and resulted in the Australian Task Force winning one of its most comprehensive victories of the Vietnam War. \nWHEN: 1100hrs on Sunday\, 18 August 2019\nWHERE: Cairns Cenotaph\, Esplanade\, Cairns \nWREATH-LAYING: Members of the public who wish to lay a wreath are required to register with the Cairns Sub Branch by close of business Thursday 15 August. After almost a quarter-century of bloodshed in the territory\, a new Indonesian government under President Habibie agreed to allow the East Timorese to vote on their future. A UN operation – the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) – was established to organize and conduct the vote\, which was held at the end of August 1999 and resulted in an overwhelming vote in favour of independence. \nTragically\, once the result had been announced\, pro-Indonesian militias\, sometimes with the support of elements of the Indonesian security forces\, launched a campaign of violence\, looting and arson throughout the entire territory. Many East Timorese were killed\, and as many as 500\,000 were displaced from their homes\, about half leaving the territory\, in some cases under threat of violence. \nEventually\, as the violence remained uncontrolled\, Indonesia agreed to the deployment of a multinational peacekeeping force. Australia\, which had contributed police to UNAMET\, organized and led the International Force for East Timor (Interfet)\, a non-UN force operating in accordance with UN resolutions. Interfet\, with the role of restoring peace and security\, protecting and supporting UNAMET\, and facilitating humanitarian assistance operations\, began arriving on 12 September 1999. Australia contributed over 5\,500 personnel and the force commander\, Major General Peter Cosgrove. \nWith the withdrawal of the Indonesian armed forces\, police and administrative officials from East Timor\, UNAMET re-established its headquarters in Dili on 28 September. On 19 October 1999\, Indonesia formally recognised the result of the referendum. Shortly thereafter\, the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) was established as an integrated\, multi-dimensional peacekeeping operation\, fully responsible for the administration of East Timor during its transition to independence. The hand-over of command of military operations from Interfet to UNTAET was completed on 28 February 2000. Australia has continued to support the UN peacekeeping operation with between 1\,500 and 2\,000 personnel\, as well as landing craft and Blackhawk helicopters. Australia remains the largest contributor of personnel to the peacekeeping mission.
