Battle of Beersheba Coin
The charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba on the afternoon of 31st October 1917 was a bold attack. Desperate to take the town that day the 4th Brigadier General William Grant order 800 men of the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments to charge as cavalry across open desert with bayonets in hand. Turkish defenders had no time to adjust rifle sights and fire went over the head of the horsemen. Within minutes the horses were leaping the trenches. Such was the speed of the attack demolition teams were unable to destroy the town’s wells and other key buildings.
The Charge delivered Beersheba and opened the door for the capture of Jerusalem in December 1917.
