International Women’s Day is a global day to celebrate the social, cultural and political achievements of women. On 25 March 1928, the first Australian International Women’s Day rally, took place in Sydney. It wasn’t until 1975, women around the world marched on International Women’s Day to demand their basic right, it was the first time that people marched for equal rights across the world. In 1931, annual marches were launched in both Sydney and Melbourne and both marches continue to be held today.
The International Women’s Day theme for 2022 is Changing Climates: Equality today for a Sustainable tomorrow – a theme that recognises the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are working to change the climate of gender equality and build a sustainable future.
This year we will be holding our 8th Annual International Women’s Day High Tea to acknowledge the amazing women throughout the world. We also acknowledge the outstanding achievements of women in the Australian Defence force who serve and have served our country every day.
This year we will be holding our International Women’s Day High Tea at the Shangri La on the Marina, our event was sold out within a week. Those who managed to get a ticket we are looking forward to hosting you on Sunday, 6 March. We have the most wonderful guest speaker lined up, which we will surprise you with on the day. This amazing women, has a first hand understanding of the Defence Community, has committed countless hours volunteering to better Cairns and is a leader in our community, as well as being one of the most lovely women you will ever meet. I am so excited to hear her talk at our high tea. I hope that I have spiked your interest and intrigue.
